Salitex Touch : The Face Behind The Brand

In the notoriously populated and actively competitive makeup industry, one brand stands tall in Kano and environs; Salitex Touch.
In this interview, we sat down with professional makeup artist, artistic director and brain behind Salitex Touch, Salomi Julius.

A dynamic and creative Makeup Artist with years of industry experience. She shares an in depth perception as to that which makes a successful makeup artist.

Tells of her journey to this point, challenges she has had to face, the importance of creating lasting relationships and recipes for staying ahead in the trendy and innovative makeup industry.

Tell us how it all started with you?
SJ: I have always been fascinated with colors and seeing people look exceptionally beautiful. And each time, I would wish I had a thing or two to do with that. I studied, took some lessons on the job and here we are.

What were the challenges faced when you started?
SJ: (laughs) It wasn't funny first time I tried convincing a client to have her makeup with me. But at the end, she was like, "I must confess, I'm amazed. You've beat my expectations." Another was carving a name for myself as it wasn't easy getting clients, but with each happy client came floods of referrals; and so a need to maintain healthy relationships.

How long have you been a makeup artist?
SJ: I officially started in 2014. So it has been an interesting 4 years and an eyeopener I must add.

Was there ever a time a client complained about your work?
SJ: Sure! But that was in my early days as a makeup artist, when I had more enthusiasm than skill. That gave me a crazy drive and a need to better myself. I look back on those days and grateful is all that I am for how big my client base has grown and I as a brand has come.

How do you stay on top of trends, techniques and innovations in the industry?
SJ: Well, I'm an internet savvy individual. In my leisure, I walk the streets of the internet seeking all things new and keeping up with trends. I acquaint myself with magazines, following fashion trends as they hugely tend to affect makeup trends; and also see what other top makeup artists are doing. My clients help too. In that some of them come to me with pictures and ideas of what they want for their makeup. In here, we learn everyday.

How do you relax?
SJ: When I am not busy with a client, I love to cook, travel, dance and take loads of eye popping pictures. (laughs)

What advice would you give to other makeup artists and enthusiasts?
SJ: In whatever they do, they should be good at it.  Pursue excellence, for with that comes success. Rumours would always fly, but your choice it is to give ears or not (like when people tell you, that you can't make it or be it). When such come, and they would come; see it as a stepping stone, learn more, read more, make researches and most importantly advertise your work on every platform available to you; be it social media, friends, family, everywhere. And when they come (clients), give them a reason to return.

What are your plans for the future?
SJ: To be bigger, better both as a brand and an individual. Sharing my knowledge and impacting as much lives as I can in the process.
